SMART (Silver Modified Atraumatic Technique) & ART (Atraumatic Restorative Technique) restorations are a wonderful treatment option for children who are younger or experiencing dental anxiety. The difference between the two is that with SMART treatment, SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) is applied at the first visit. These treatment options allow the dentist to restore the tooth without a drill, shot, or sedation. This treatment option is specifically tailored to each patient, depending on their individual needs. These treatments can also be completed while the patient is lying in the parent’s lap. The goal of this particular procedure is that it is quick and easy! We want to avoid any stress or fear in our patients. We want our patient to grow up enjoying going to the dentist to keep their smiles healthy. Your child does not experience discomfort or pain, as only the mushy/soft part of the cavity is gently removed. The tooth is filled or covered with a special type of filling material – Glass Ionomer. The Glass ionomers we use in our office are Equia Forte and Fuji II LC. If the tooth is covered with material, we will use a clear tooth crown former to get the perfect shape, depending on the size of the tooth. These clear crown formers are removed at least two days after the procedure is completed. These materials bond to the tooth and prevent progression of the cavity, and also prevent any sensitivity. Watch the videos below to see how the treatment is completed.
